Irving, Texas: Culture at the Heart of Irving

Irving’s Heritage Crossing District offers a myriad of museums covering a host of eras. Beginning with Heritage House, where J.O. Schulz’s brother, co-founder of Irving, built his home in 1912, visitors can learn about Irving’s pioneer days. The Jackie Townsell Bear Creek Heritage Center tells the history of free blacks and formerly enslaved people who settled the west Irving community of Bear Creek. The Ruth Paine House Museum, where Lee Harvey Oswald spent the night before the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, provides a detailed account of the events surrounding that historic day. Any visit to Heritage Crossing isn’t complete without stopping by one of the unique eateries, which feature local flavors and global cuisine.

One of Irving’s most iconic sights, the Mustangs of Las Colinas, features nine bronze mustangs galloping across a granite stream. Nearby, the Mustangs of Las Colinas Museum tells the story of artist Robert Glen and his remarkable creation. Also in Las Colinas is the vibrant Flower Clock, a 27-foot-wide floral timepiece composed of over 650 shrubs that bloom year-round. Across from the Mustangs, Water Street lines the shores of Lake Carolyn with nearly 60,000 square feet of dining and retail, 300 luxury apartments, and a scenic park for festivals, markets and lakefront strolls.

The Toyota Music Factory is a premier entertainment hub, anchored by The Pavilion, which transforms from a 4,000-seat indoor venue to an 8,000-seat amphitheater. It’s surrounded by 25 restaurants and a movie theater, offering dining and entertainment in one spot. Jaycee Park Center for the Arts, home to the Irving Arts Association, features indoor galleries and tranquil outdoor gardens and a duck pond for a relaxing art experience.

The Irving Arts Center spans 10 acres with four galleries, two theaters hosting over 200 performances annually, and a sculpture garden. As a Smithsonian Affiliate, it presents both local and traveling exhibitions. It’s also home to 12 founding cultural organizations, including ballet, theater and symphony groups.

The Jackie Townsell Bear Creek Heritage Center comprises three museums that tell the history of this community, particularly the experiences of African Americans from emancipation through the Civil Rights movement of the 1950s-1960s.
