The Rock Building, built in 1886, was originally the Silver Spur Saloon and the cornerstone of the historic downtown. It is now a Visitor Center and Museum and has recently been designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. The city has additional historical markers at the Water Tower on Oak Street and at the former Continental State Bank at 109 South Oak Street. The restored Oak Street area features landscaped sidewalks stretching for nine blocks.

At the corner of Oak and Austin streets is Austin Street Plaza, a popular location for entertainment and relaxation. Roanoke’s historic downtown also has a variety of unique shops and small businesses perfect for a relaxed stroll, browsing antiques or local goods, and enjoying the small-town vibe.
