Roanoke’s unique history dates back to the 1840s and is complemented by rich amenities, including its popular historic downtown district listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Rock Building, built in 1886, was originally the Silver Spur Saloon and the cornerstone of the historic downtown. It is now a Visitor Center and Museum and has recently been designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. The city has additional historical markers at the Water Tower on Oak Street and at the former Continental State Bank at 109 South Oak Street. The restored Oak Street area features landscaped sidewalks stretching for nine blocks.
